Biographical note

Elizabeth "Anne" Dismukes Amerson was born and raised in Lumpkin County, Georgia. After graduating from North Georgia College, she married her college sweetheart, Hinton S. "Amos" Amerson after graduation. After 24 years in the US Army, the Amersons retired to Dahlonega in 1979. Beginning in 1989, Amerson published a series of articles called "I Remember Dahlonega" for The Dahlonega Nugget before going on to write a dozen books and more than 60 articles for North Georgia Journal and Georgia Backroads (in 2002, North Georgia Journal became Georgia Backroads).

Amerson specialized in writing about local history. Her research was typically conducted via oral history interviews and she had a real passion for sharing what life is like in Northeast Georgia. In 1989, she was awarded the Madeleine K. Anthony Award for historic preservation by the Lumpkin County Historical Society. She was named Outstanding Citizen by JB Jones in 1995. In 2003 she was named a Humanities Hero and received the Georgia Author Award from the Georgia Association of College Stores. She was inducted into the University of North Georgia's Hall of Fame in 2009 and received the Historic Preservation Medal from the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution in 2013.

In addition to her writings about local history, Amerson served as a charter member of the Lumpkin County Historical Society and the Friends of the Dahlonega Gold Museum. She regularly volunteered as a docent at the Gold Museum, led walking tours of the Dahlonega square, and frequently served as a speaker for local clubs and organizations.
